THERE ARE NO SHORTCUTS to the professional certification in hypnotism. Some mostly non-NGH instructors advertise their courses as professional certification but to be less than curriculum practice of 100 hours. Don't be fooled by this -  Those are misrepresented and are NOT certification courses, but merely the PRE-certification courses designed to educate you about hypnosis and hypnotherapy and demonstrate some techniques, available to you when you take the course in full. We accept students of such courses to get recertified in our school, to receive the NGH certificate and membership with NGH. Pre-certification courses are usually less than 25 hours each and much less expensive as the full course. With the pre-certification course you gain a basic knowledge of the profession but in no way get prepared to practice with clients, and only through taking the full course of 100 hours can you receive the NGH professional certification as a trained professional. Admission Requirements

All applicants must complete a registration application (must be signed by a parent or guardian if the applicant is under 18 years of age). A deposit of $500 is paid in order to hold your place in a class, (the $250 registration fee is included in the deposit). All US applicants must have a high school diploma or its equivalent (GED); International students must have their country's equivalent. Students must agree to maintain the NGH standard codes of conduct and strict code of ethics. Foreign students must have basic knowledge of English. Prepayment is mandatory. You will not be admitted without partial or full pre-payment.

You will receive a professional Certificate from NGH stating that you are a Certified Hypnotist, unless you are a medical professional and then you will receive a title Certified Hypnotherapist.

PH.D. in Hypnosis? Doctor of Hypnotherapy?

Just so you know, there is no such thing as Ph.D. in Hypnosis, at least officially, and if you hear it from someone who has this title, it is not NGH approved and probably from a not approved and not accredited or partial training. Q: Do I need the Certification?
A: If you want to practice Hypnotherapy as a profession  you must have a certificate. After your Level II training is completed, you become an NGH Certified Hypnotherapist. You become internationally certified by the National Guild of Hypnotists, and you can open your practice and begin to earn your living being a hypnotherapist.
 

Q: Is this a license?

A: Hypnotherapy is not a licensed profession and you do not need a license to practice hypnosis in the US or abroad, therefore the NGH certification you receive here at New York Awareness Center is your only document you need to start practicing as a certified hypnotist.

Q: Is there any legislation in New York State?
A: Currently, there is no legislation pending in New York. In the event that it happens, the NGH has legislative advocates who are protecting the profession of hypnotherapy.

Q: What are the annual CEU's re-Certification requirements?
A: All CEU's for the NGH are calculated hour for hour (1 hour = 1 CEU)  You need 15 CEU's per year.

Here is a list of NGH Recertification requirements, where you can fulfill one or several of the following so you have the needed amount of hours complete:

1. Submitting the answers to the quiz given in the Journal of Hypnotism.

2. Attendance at the NGH annual Convention, an NGH weekend seminar, or a course given by an NGH Certified Instructor.

3. Attendance at the NGH Chapter meetings with a speaker, panel discussion, or workshop.  Hourly credits given when the local Chapter submits a list of names and addresses of meeting attendees.

4. Any pre-approved (by NGH) course conducted by a member teaching standard hypnosis subjects to others.

5. Any pre-approved (by NGH) course or seminar conducted by a recognized professional hypnosis group.

6. Any article researched and written by you which is accepted for publication in the Journal of Hypnotism or the Hypno-Gram.

7. Independent study using NGH approved texts or videos.  Most standard hypnosis, psychology, and counseling textbooks are approved.  You must submit outline/report demonstrating your understanding of the book or video.

8. Assist in the presentation of an NGH Certified Course or Workshop under the mentorship of an NGH Certified Instructor.

9. Teach a class or classes for the public on such subjects as self-hypnosis, stress, weight loss, relaxation, etc.

10. Attend classes on hypnosis-related subjects at an institution of higher learning. (Example: Psychology, Counseling, at Community College, night school, extension courses, etc.)

• What is the difference between Hypnotherapist and Hypnotist?

There is no difference. The "therapy" part in the word "Hypnotherapy" as well as in the title of the profession is going to disappear in the next few years due to legislative issues and common sense guidelines. You will receive a title and a Certificate saying "Certified Hypnotist". In regulated states this title will be the only choice. In unregulated states, like New York, you will have a choice to be called Hypnotherapist or Hypnotist. I have both.

• What is the legal aspect of working with Hypnosis?

• What is the governing body for hypnotists?

The most recognized and the largest Certifying body in the US is NGH National Guild or Hypnotists, click here to read about NGH.

• Do I get a license or a certificate?

You get a Certificate stating that you are an NGH Certified Hypnotherapist/ Certified Hypnotist.

• Is there an exam similar to bar exam? Can I pass it?

There is no such thing as a bar exam for Hypnotherapy Certification, however, you will be given examinations in the end of each level, determining the level of your knowledge, the absorption of the material and the quality of your practice and homework learning.

• What is the amount of hours one needs to devote to getting this NGH HYPNOTHERAPY certification?

You will be required to devote the total of 100 hours of your time, classroom and homework to acquire your NGH Certification. Read about the NGH Hypnotherapy Certification Program Curriculum and Requirements here.

• What are prerequisites to NGH HYPNOTHERAPY CERTIFICATION TRAINING program?

There are no pre-requisites to enter this program other than you must be over 18 years of age and have a determination to complete the course and make it your profession.

• What is I have another full-time job? Could I still get the NGH HYPNOTHERAPY CERTIFICATION TRAINING?

• Could I get my training in the spring? or next fall? Yes, you can, training schedules are frequent and repeated every month.

• How much do I pay?

• What are class sizes?

Class sizes are kept small for the benefit of each student to get personalized attention from the instructor.

• Where do I take the class?

• Can I get the training online?

Training for Hypnotherapy online is not possible You need to be in class to make the techniques and practices possible. Students come from all over the world to study at New York Awareness Center.  However, go to www.NGH.net and they will recommend you an NGH certified instructor in your area.

• Can I get the training in one weekend according to some advertisement?

No, such classes are not NGH certification classes, they are merely a pre-certification classes, designed to educate you about general idea of hypnosis, not hypnotherapy as a profession, and you will get minimal knowledge, continue to read here.

Legislative Issues

Over the past several months there have been several legal and legislative changes that may affect students of hypnotherapy. New July 2004 additions to the State Law  information (which can be downloaded from www.ngh.net)

Unregulated - Safe Practice  - States (19 states)

You may freely practice in accordance with the Recommended Standards of the Guild in the following states:  Alabama, Delaware, Georgia, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Vermont, Virginia, and Wisconsin.

National Guild Standard (15 states plus District of Columbia and Ontario)

You may practice in these states within Recommended Standards provided you identify yourself as a “Hypnotist,” call the service you render “nontherapeutic hypnotism,” and add to your Client Bill of Rights the following paragraph:

Alaska, Arkansas, Arizona, Connecticut, District of Columbia, Hawaii, Maryland, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, West Virginia and Wyoming.

You must comply with the law. In all cases you must follow the Recommended Standards.

California, Colorado, Florida, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota, New Jersey, New Hampshire (REGULATION VOLUNTARY), New Mexico, Nevada (forensic hypnosis only), New York*, North Carolina, Rhode Island, Utah, and Washington.

In order to practice hypnotism in those states, you must be practicing in accordance with the Code of Ethics and Recommended Standards of the National Guild of Hypnotists, and using the Recommended Terminology for Hypnotic Practice of the Guild. Failure to follow Guild Standards and Terminology may result in a violation of state law, even in a state listed as Safe Practice.

Cancellation of Enrollment

Students have the right to cancel an agreement for a course of instruction. You may cancel without penalty or obligation at any time until 12 noon of the first day of class and obtain a refund of the amount paid, less a $250 registration and processing fee, upon having returned all handout materials. Cancellation will occur when a student gives written notice of cancellation. A signed and dated notice of cancellation may be given by mail, email or fax. The notice of cancellation, if sent by mail, is effective when deposited in the mail, properly addressed with postage prepaid. The written notice of cancellation shall state you wish to cancel the agreement. New York Awareness Center shall refund any consideration paid by the student within 30 days after the cancellation notice is received.

Refund Policy

A student may withdraw from a course after instruction has started and receive a prorate refund for the unused portion of the tuition and other refundable charges if you have completed 60% or less of the instruction. To determine your refund you would deduct registration fee of $250 from the tuition charge. You would divide this figure by the number of hours in the program. The quotient is the hourly charge for the program. The amount owed by the student for the purpose of calculating a refund is derived by multiplying the total hours attended by the hourly charge for instruction plus the amount of the registration fee and the documented cost of any manuals or materials that were not returned within the 30 day period.

For the purpose of determining the amount you owe for time you attended, you shall be deemed to have withdrawn from the course when any of the following occurs: You notify New York Awareness Center of your withdrawal or of the actual date of withdrawal in writing, or New York Awareness Center terminates your enrollment in writing.
