Is Fear Ever Useful?
Yes! Fears are not always
a bad thing. In fact, fear is valuable if it serves a useful purpose, such
as creating caution or being prepared for emergencies, etc. But when fear
results in intense and irrational behaviors, that threaten a person's
well-being, it merits therapeutic attention.

All you want to know about Phobias and AnxietiesAnxiety can be caused by a medical condition. Hypoglycemia, hypo-thyroid can cause an anxiety attack. People with atherosclerosis, or brain tumor, or all kinds of cardio-vascular problems may be affected by panic attacks, anxieties and various fears. People with asthmas are likely to be fearful and anxious. Emphysema and the like conditions can cause various sorts of anxiety. Medical conditions can cause depression, personality disorders, nicotine and alcohol, and drug addictions. In addition, the medication, which a client may be currently taking could affect the moods and add to anxiety and phobias feelings. Before you address the phobia that you may think you have, please check with you medical doctor for possible side-effects of the medications. Finally, environmental exposure, living or working in an environment of pollution or stress can cause anxiety disorders of various kinds. After you have done a complete medical check up and eliminated all medical problems that may be causing your anxieties, let us discuss the still persisting irrational fears, which impair your life. Vice versa, a medical condition can be caused by the high level of anxiety. Our brain is affected first by many and most conditions and experiences. After one had experienced a tumultuous flight in bad weather conditions, or heard on the news about the AA flight 11 destroying the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York in 2001, one may develop a fear of flying. Such anxious behavior at the thought of flying would be called avoidance behavior. So we stop flying altogether. This is where hypnosis can help you. To strengthen one's defenses against irrational fears and phobias one must work toward becoming physically fit. We always start working toward successful release from the anxieties by supporting ourselves with a little homework: physical exercises producing endorphins and flooding your body with useful energy producing chemicals, won't allow you to stay in a state of anxious depression. Instead, you will begin to feel energized and enthusiastic about life, which in many cases helps decrease and may completely eliminate fears, phobias and anxieties. One must spend about 30 minutes a day outside in a day-light, walking or just enjoying the day. SAD is a common case scenario of seasonal affected disorder, when one may suffer from a lack of sunshine. In the winter, we see many more cases of depression and anxiety. And finally, cutting down on cigarettes, caffeine and TV may help too. Instead, spending time in conversation with friends; walking in the park or visiting a museum, meeting new people and picking up a hobby, is a wonderful way toward cure from anxious behavior and fears. One must also be aware of the amount of vitamins they need to take in each day. Vitamin K - a lack of which can create anxiety and hypokalimia, and potassium, - a lack of this one can cause muscle spasms, and lead to hyperventilation (heavy breathing) and panic attack. ![]() In New York Awareness Center office you will be in a safe professional environment Anxiety DisordersNearly 1 in 10 Americans suffer from an anxiety disorder. Anxiety disorders are chronic, irrational, and can intensify if untreated. The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) identifies five anxiety disorders:
Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD):Approximately 3 to 4 percent of the American population suffer from GAD. They chronically worry and are tense out of proportion to the actual events in their lives. People with GAD are often less impaired than sufferers of other anxiety disorders. They usually have sleep disorders and difficulty relaxing, tend to feel tired, have trouble concentrating, and often startle easily. GAD generally comes on gradually, sometimes beginning as early as childhood or adolescence, and symptoms can diminish with age.Obsessive-Compulsive DisorderApproximately 2 percent of the population suffer from OCD. About one-third of adult cases begin in childhood. Sufferers of OCD experience uncontrollable anxious thoughts (obsessions) and/or ritual behavior (compulsions). A person is diagnosed with OCD when compulsive activities consume at least an hour a day, are very distressing, and interfere with daily life.Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
PTSD is characterized by persistent, frightening thoughts and memories that follow a terrifying event.
Any traumatic incident can trigger PTSD and therefore it can affect anyone,
although recent research indicates women are more prone to developing PTSD than
are men. The NIMH estimates that approximately 4 percent of the American
population will experience symptoms of PTSD sometime during their lives.
Symptoms typically begin within 3 months of the traumatic incident, although
they can begin years later.
Panic Disorder
According to the NIMH 3 to 6
million Americans, approximately two-thirds of them women, suffer panic
disorders. Panic can appear at any age although it usually begins in young
adulthood. Some people experience one panic attack and never have another,
while others develop full-blown panic disorder. Panic disorder most always
includes agoraphobia.
